What inspires Mouhit Space to engage in field support?
Motivation to contribute to building a sustainable and more independent cultural ecosystem in Tunisia.
Belief in the power of grassroots initiatives to transform the local art scene.
Desire to nurture experimentation and risk-taking as essential parts of artistic growth and innovation.
Peer Learning for Tunisia’s Arts
What We Are Testing
We center our approach around principles of sustainability and community support, focusing on creating space for peer-to-peer learning through a diverse public program that includes workshops, community gatherings, and residency programs. We offer an inclusive and safe environment grounded in a culture of feedback. This encourages the sharing of knowledge, tools, and skills, while also creating opportunities for connections and collaborations at different scales.
Peer Lab & Artistic Research
Developing a platform at the intersection of food, ecology, and art, where artists, farmers, and researchers can exchange knowledge and experiment with new ideas.
Knowledge-Sharing
Creating digital and print-based archives (radio, publications, and zines) to document and share artistic practices, ensuring that knowledge circulates beyond physical gatherings.
Peer Learning & Mentorship
Hosting residencies, collaborative workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions that connect artists across generations and disciplines to build a stronger, interconnected creative community.
As we carry out this experiment, we are asking ourselves:
- How can we support the sustainability of local artistic practices that are facing challenges in adapting to the complex global context?
- How can we create a collaborative learning environment that bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary practices, while ensuring that both local and global contexts inform and enrich the artistic process?
- Given the increasing need for alternative models of support within the cultural sector, how can Mouhit experiment with innovative funding, partnership, and mentorship structures that can strengthen the ecosystem?
- How do we leave everyone we interact with—especially through long-term programs—with meaningful and lasting change?
- How can we exchange cultural practices and methodologies effectively with other institutions and practitioners?
- How do we turn evaluation feedback into actionable, applicable outcomes?
- What strategies can help us empower and enable cultural actors in their different roles more effectively?
Meet the team
Mouhit is an independent art space based in Tunis, dedicated to supporting creative practitioners at all stages of their journey. We provide a welcoming environment for reflection, experimentation, and self-development through residencies, workshops, and community programs. Our space values slowness, care, and shared learning, offering room for process rather than production. Run by a small team of artists and art practitioners, Mouhit operates with a spirit of DIY and collective effort, often adapting to challenges with creativity and flexibility. Our space is home not only to artists but also to a few chickens and cats, who are just as much a part of the community. Together, we cultivate a space where creativity can flourish naturally and without pressure.
